The Grimshaw Residence in Des Peres, Missouri is an example of how the architects of Jeff Day and Associates work closely with our clients to take an inspiration and bring it to life.
The clients were a young couple with a toddler and plans to grow their family. The couple enjoyed the support of their parents during the husband’s residency as an orthopedic surgeon. While looking for a home, they were inspired by a residence that had a guest house and pool, and a plan emerged to create a custom home where all three generations could live together and support one another.
Purchasing land from Vanderbilt Homes, who in turn had an ongoing professional association with Jeff Day and Associates, our team worked with the clients to develop a home that would allow grandparents to have a relationship with their grandkids over time, as well as prepare for the years when the grandparents would need support.
The family created wish lists of features and requirements, and our architects attended many meetings in order to flesh out the ultimate design of this 5500 square foot Craftsman home.
The house features open spaces, coffered and vaulted ceilings as well as wood trim elements typical of a craftsman-era home. Cabinetry and millwork reflect the design elements of craftsmen, such as the clean lines of shaker doors and large crown molding and shiplap planking on the kitchen ceiling.
The house boasts wood plank, ceramic plank and natural stone flooring. Spaces are defined by arches, such as that separating the spacious kitchen from the living room. Doorways have a unique arched element that fits well within the craftsman design.
The home has plenty of natural lighting from the energy efficient windows found all through the house. While retaining the charm of a vintage craftsman home the house is designed with energy efficiency in mind through careful design and choices of HVAC systems, insulation and material selections.
Our work was featured in St. Louis Homes Magazine where the homeowners were effusive in their descriptions. Visit the website for the article.
